Left 1923-2023: The stubborn journey

The family resorted to donations to transport one of the greatest Mexican revolutionaries, who had died in captivity, from the United States. The new regime elevated Francisco I. Madero to the rank of martyr, but refused to recognize a social fighter who had made the armed feat possible.

"What was urgent to tell is that the Mexican left is not the product of spontaneous generation, but of resistance. That it has survived for decades the persecution of the State, the appropriation of the discourse, a party (the PRI) that devoured the Revolution of 1910 so as not to be forced to comply with its postulates. A left that resisted murders and forced disappearances, that for a century has faced an overwhelmingly dominant, skillful and accommodating current of thought: the right," say the authors in this new book that comes after The Dispute for Mexico.

"We were urged to say that so many dead and so many repressed movements have remained in the collective memory despite all efforts to erase it; that a kind of lineage has been generated, one single one, that escapes the pejorative plural. It is the left, with a raised fist. A single left. With its many faults and errors; with its heroes and villains, corrupt and irreproachable. A left that resisted electoral fraud, massacres and torture; that many times hid in the ravines or in the wooden shacks in the mountains and that other times took over squares and main squares and marched, until it overflowed at the polls."
